Three Things Your Should Know About Drug Rehab Centers

If you are selecting drug rehab centers, here is how to end the confusion over how to select the best facility for you.

The recommendation of a trusted friend or professional is often a better choice than picking addiction treatment centers at random from the internet or phone book.  All reputable rehab centers are properly accredited and offer the 12 step model to recovery or an accepted alternative.

Read on to better understand each of these three important factors and avoid the possibility of investing time and money into drug rehab treatment that just is not going to work for you.

Finding Drug Treatment Centers

With the array of drug addiction treatment options available, you are probably confused as to how to evaluate drug rehab centers.

While the internet or yellow pages is certainly an option, and should be explored, it is not the best option.  Get additional recommendations from a mental health professional, doctor or pastor.  They will provide you with unbiased recommendations and help you evaluate which treatment centers are right for you.

However, while the recommendation of a professional is important, it is equally important that the drug rehabs you consider be properly accredited.

Select A Drug Rehab Facility That Is Properly Accredited

A reputable drug rehab facility is going to be properly accredited.

Specifically, drug rehab centers are accredited by one of two accrediting authorities.  The first, and most common, accrediting authority is the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHCO).  Other drug treatment centers may be accredited by the Commission On Accreditation Of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

Either accreditation is acceptable.  If you can find rehab centers that are accredited by both, all the better.

Once, you find addiction treatment centers that are properly accredited, it is time to examine their approach to drug abuse treatment.

Which Drug Addiction Treatment Model  Does The Facility Use?

Almost all of the accredited rehab centers facility have three phases to their treatment programs: detox, therapy and aftercare (also called integration).

While the detox portion of the program is relatively standardized, the approach to therapy and aftercare falls into two main models.  The first model is the familiar and highly successful “12 step model” which has been developed in response to virtually every type of addiction.  For those few that do not respond to the traditional model, some drug rehab centers have developed 12 step alternative treatment program that includes:

  • holistic therapy
  • cognitive-behavioral therapy
  • biofeedback
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
  • experiential treatment
  • motivation therapy
  • social / educational programs
  • self-esteem building
  • life skills training
  • medical treatment
  • nutritional supplements
  • psychological counseling
  • alternative medicines
  • yoga, Tai Chi and meditation training

I would recommend that initially you choose the traditional 12 step program as that has been proven to be most successful with the greatest number of people.

Now that you know more about the factors that make an effective drug treatment center, you can approach the selection process with a whole new level of insight and confidence.

While, getting the recommendation of a professional for an accredited drug rehab facility is an important first step.  Evaluating the drug addiction treatment facility’s twelve step approach to therapy and aftercare is equally important.

So, now that you are armed with this information, it is time to get up and take action.  Frankly, you are out of excuses.
